Important & Historical Uranium Blue Opalescent & Vaseline Glass Bowl, by Aetna, USA circa 1887

Here is an enchanting opalescent bowl which will surely be most welcomed by collectors of early & historical American opalescent glass and admirers alike.

Little is known about the factory who produced this charming bowl. It was produced by The Aetna Glass & Manufacturing Company of Bellaire, Ohio, a company who produced glass for no more than 9 years, following its founding by Owen Meehan in circa 1880.

It is also recorded that Aetna produced its own moulds as well as moulds for other companies: Rodefer-Gleason; Belmont & even the prominent Imperial Glass Company, all of which were manufacturing their glass types in Bellaire, Ohio during or slightly later at this period

Quite as to why the company fell into decline or perhaps merged with another, is unknown to me however the opalescent qualities of this bowl compares to and with, any other glass factory of the period who produced such glass. The glass also poses the qualities of Vaseline Glass as it fluoresces quite wonderfully when lit by UV, in a beautiful colour tone of blue, caused by the addition of uranium to the crystal.

Aetna, introduced their opalescent glass In circa 1887 and was a development by their manager a certain Mr Shelly. This bowl is pattern named, Diamond & Dewdrop and is also known as Hobnail-in-Square. It is exquisitely moulded, just as its namesake, with crisply defined diamond quilted pattern which are each centred with hobnail-type prunts.

The interior of the bowl is smooth, however upon closer inspection, the inner base surround has been moulded with a ring of ovals in high relief.

To me, the most delightful feature of all is the beautifully moulded underside base, where a stylized star has been created using a series of opalescent glass pearls, which also compliments the top rim of the bowl with excellence.

Also excellent is the condition of this piece. It is completely free of any damage and so is offered to you here in MINT condition, which is no mean feat for such an enchanting glass object, that is over 100 years old...

Should you have one of these bowls then you are fortunate and if not, then I offer the opportunity.

Sweet & Petite, the bowl is 4.75 inches in diameter, 2inches high and with a postage weight of just 1k 200gms, makes it convenient to all and at an affordable price.
