August Walther established his glass works in c1888 at Ottendorf-Okilla, Dresden, Germany. Later, he famously produced some of the most outstanding Art Deco, quality moulded glass of the period and here is one beautiful example for your collection.
Introduced and catalogued circa 1934, Arabella was available as this centrepiece with numerous bowl pattern varieties. The central figure was also available as a solitary figurine upon a black glass plinth and also as the integral part of a lamp of the same pattern name.
Walther glass center pieces make a statement.
They are incredible works of art which demand attention.
The magnificent quality of the peach-pink glass combined with exceptional moulded details, combines to become a three-part center piece of timeless beauty.
Walther, did not manufacture an Arabella bowl by pattern name. One simply purchased from an extensive range as a matter of personal choice. Unlike say the Pelikan center piece for example (please see my listings for examples of the pelikan center piece)
The Walther bowl as was chosen for this Arabella figurine, is bowl pattern Primus and what a fabulous Art Deco bowl it is.
It is raised upon four thickly moulded feet to give height and sturdiness whilst also allowing for beautiful optical presentation. Only the underside of the bowl has been moulded, with a decorative spiral of alternating stain-frosted & clear glass panels, which culminate to form a wonderful scalloped rim. It is a beautiful bowl in its own right and is admired as being such.
The Arabella lady herself, has been provided with an accompanying flower-frog, which not only serves a purpose for the ease of flower arranging, it also offers a sturdy & befitting base for the figurine, and isn't she the most charming.
Arabella & Schale Fische (as appropriately named) has been almost metamorphic-ally moulded, as the stylized angel fish (which forms the background) combines with the flowing dress of the lady & trailing water weed. The fish is exquisite and superbly detailed, with each feature being finely moulded.
My photographs speak for the lady perhaps however a particular pretty feature is her hat which is a sea shell which adds to the aquatic theme of this sensational center piece.
The final photograph, shows the size scale of this incredible center piece, alongside a Sowerby example which is also currently available here in my shop.
The condition of this Arabella center piece is remarkable. As so often is the case, there is a chip to the flower frog (as shown) but this becomes invisible when the lady is in situ as intended. Age related wear is of course understandable and is evident upon the feet of the bowl, but nothing to detract.
It is simply gorgeous.
