Pierre d'Avesn is perhaps best known for his wonderful glass designs for Rene Lalique, in the early 1920's. The vases, "Tourbillon" & "Serpent" for example, are probably his most famous.
He later became employed by Daum, where he was both designer & manager at their Croismare Factory, Luneville, France. Circa 1927. The purpose of his employment were his glass skills which could rival and compete with the popular and desirable works of Lalique. The USA for example had become a lucrative marketplace for such quality glassware. Long before the onsets of the depression in 1932.
Not all d'Avesn items are signed. Particularly his vases made at Daum. Some did however have moulded marks, but not always the case.
His work is on parallel with that of Lalique, in both terms of design and quality. Only their signatures can determine their individual desirability, which as always is down to ones own personal taste and interested investment.
The d'Avesn vase offered here was produced by Daum between 1927-1923. It is a triumphant piece of glass craftsmanship, with cleverly thought designing to give pleasing and useful winged-handles.
Wonderful scrolls of thick-duty glass, afford a trophy-style form to this vase. They enable one to pick up the piece with ease. The handles have been fire-polished to compliment the matt-finished body of the vase itself.
The wave formed patterns to the body of the vase, has been acid-finished. A much favoured and well established technique adopted and used by Daum. Acid etching, is a meticulous craft. It is both time consuming and unpredictable, however its abilities to decorate glass were more greater than sandblasting, despite the acid being less controllable. Acid treated glass also takes-on a wonderful feel to its surface.
This is one of two of these vases currently listed in my shop. This wonderful example being in a shade colour of misty-blue.
These are important vase types of their period and are tremendous quality items of Art Deco Glass Design, by Pierre d'Avesn, France.
The vase here offered is in perfect condition, with no chips, cracks or defects.
