In Buddhist art, this has got to be one of the most incredible of all images: Lord of Dharma, Avalokitesvara, who looks upon all beings with infinite compassion.
Om mane padme hum, is his/her mantra.
Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is depicted here with no less than 1000 hands, 1000 eyes & 11 heads.
Each hand (it is believed) has an eye of wisdom on each palm, allowing the Bodhisattva to see the sufferings of all sentient beings. The thousand hands enabling her to reach out to help them. It is an amazing sacred image of Buddhist belief, and of artistic beauty, which up close, the finite detailing will astound you.
It has been meticulously carved & moulded by hand and then secured upon an oblong plinth of natural marble/granite stone, to provide a sturdy support.
It was purchased by myself during one of many visits to the Swayambhu Buddhist Temple in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal, circa 1988.
It is a firmly held & recorded that the Buddha himself visited Swayambhu, where he gave many teachings two hundred years earlier.
The material used to produce this amazing item appears to be white terracotta or similar fine clay. It has been mounted upon a marble/granite base which is non removable.
It is a beautiful decorative Buddhist piece for your collection,of which is also of good vintage and most worthy.
