NOT to be confused with modern day copies is this incredible two piece statue figure of Garuda.
In Hindu religion, Garuda is a lesser deity mount of the God Vishnu. It is believed that he was so large that he could block the sun. He is also the sworn enemy of the Naga, a serpent race and known for feeding exclusively on snakes. He plays an important role in Krishna Avatar and is worshiped for his abilities as a protector.
This finely executed study of Garuda has been moulded from brass & copper. It was produced in Patan, Nepal and dates from the mid 20th century. For centuries, Patan has produced the finest quality Hindu & Buddhist metal sculpture in the world and this representation is no exception.
His commanding presence is an excellent achievement of lost wax casting. From the detail of his cobra-snake charms and neck chains to his wings, hands and other features, all have been crafted with skill. The Garuda figure has been solid cast.
He stands upon his sworn enemy in readiness to devour. The Naga (on which Garuda stands) has also been detailed with excellence. The solid cast figure stands upon a hollow pedestal which is based with copper.
A fierce looking chap he is, however it is believed that his wrathful appearance was developed to represent the short toed eagle of India, which can be observed feeding on cobras'. The Naga, also being a snake related and lesser deity, then gave rise to their religious union. Naga's are both benevolent & wrathful in Hinduism and just as Garuda, are protectors.
I lived in Nepal & India, for some six years studying the Buddhist art of Thangka. I purchased this statue myself, in Patan, circa 1988.
Patan, is steeped with history as too is this magnificent representation of Garuda. Just one of many such items listed here in my shop. Smaller,one-piece modern day figures such as this, are still not low priced items to purchase. One only needs to study the workmanship to see why that is and one certainly doesn't need to be of Hindu faith or Buddhist belief to admire this incredible work of art.
I have not attempted to clean this statue and so it has a good aged patina. The base is also impressed marked as shown.
