It was produced in France during the Art Deco modernist period by EZAN, who were unarguably one of the market leaders of their genre. Opalescent glass chandeliers such as this were reserved for the high classes of society, and the vast majority becoming installations for ocean liners, hotels and theaters of the period. From wall sconces to single desk lamps and multi-tiered & branched chandeliers, Ezan, predominated with the production of these incredible ‘cascading Icicle’ designed lustres & luminaires.
Surprisingly and despite the remarkable examples which Ezan are renowned for, is that very little historical information about this named maker (?) exists. It is known however that they were based in Ezanville near Paris France, either as a factory or as a high class retailer, much the same as Etling for example.
It cannot be ruled out that Ezan glass was produced at Choisy-le-Roi, where the finest quality of French opalescent glass of its era was produced. It only takes one look at the opalescent glass by Ezan, to know that it is a glass of undeniable quality and it is `up there' with the likes of Etling, Verlys, and even Lalique. However, the characteristics of Ezan opalescent glass, was produced in the main, to be robust and suitable for lamp-shade use, rather than say for vases or figurines for example. Ezan lamp shades & pendants, are thickly moulded items of glass, specifically designed for the purpose of defusing electrical light to its optimum.
I am unable to show you this entire piece, installed in situ and fully lit, however subject it being fitted appropriately by a qualified electrician (as would be the case for any lighting of this type) I can guarantee the piece to be in complete working order. I have added a photograph of just one of opalescent glass shades, lit from within to illustrate just how beautiful this glass truly is… However, I am sure you will agree that light fittings such as this are an absolute joy to behold once in situ from a ceiling whether they are in use or not. The qualities of French opalescent glass needs to be seen to be believed and fully appreciated. The glass hs the ability to constantly fluctuate with a variety of colours from say milky-blues to creamy-pinks with hints of purple and golden translucent amber, which are all subject to different light conditions and its movement during the course of the day…
Many of these incredible pendant light fittings are truly HUGE which in turn can make them unsuitable for average domestic use. Not in the case here, for this wonderful example has a drop-size of just under 24 inches (60cm) and has width of 29.5 inches (75cm) making it ideal for almost every interior setting without becoming obtrusive, dominating or overpowering. Each separate lamp-shade is 8 inches (20cm) diameter x 3.5 inches (9cm) high.
It is simply a mighty-fine example of original French Art Deco interior display, coupled with intended use and of course very wise investment…
CONDITION REPORT: All of the glass components are free from any damage. The copper-metal fitments are also in fabulous vintage condition, which is best illustrated by studying my photographs. The light-bulb fittings are the standard bayonet type and though I am offering this piece in excellent working order, it should obviously be checked by a qualified electrician for reasons of safety.
