This is one of several French Art Deco sculptures of male studies that I am currently offering from my collection. It is an original documented & recorded study by Carlier, and it is stunning.
Emile Joseph Nestor Carlier (1849-1927) was born in France at Cambrai. He studied at local art schools before moving to Paris where he was a pupil of Jouffroy, Cavelier and Chapu at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He received many medals for his work and held the rank of ‘Officier’ in the Legion of Honour.
This is a quality piece by Carlier, which uses bronze-patinated spelter metal mounted upon a black onyx & marble base. The archers bow has been produced from Ivorine, and is original & contemporary to the piece.
Carlier, sculptured this incredible study during the early 1920s and no later than 1924. He was unarguably one of the leading exponents of his era, and his male sculptures in particular are considered by many to be the best from the period, as I would also tend to agree…
He had an amazing eye for detail whilst he captured his sculptured figures, all of which display an incredible sense of movement and naturalistic pose. It is thought that he and Salvatore Melani (1902-1934) quite possibly drew influence from each other’s works, in friendly but direct competition, and they may have even used the same life-models to produce their own interpretations of ‘athletic’ postured studies of the male figure, and here is one of the finest…
… This particular piece captures the ‘art’ of the Art Deco period with its sleek & slender-lines whilst also faithfully representing its subject to perfection. It is a powerful image which catches our eyes in an instant as it also displays a graceful style which is suitable for any interior setting. It is a tremendous example of its period and its condition is as close to mint as you could wish for… It is quite simply stunning.
It is a large and impressive piece with a total length of just under 22 inches and with a height being the same. The arc of the bow is 17 inches from point to point and is detachable into two separate pieces both of which are fixed back into place by an integral screw-fixing. This makes for ease of transportation & shipment for example whilst also allowing the sculpture to be dusted if/when required. The sculpture itself is also removable from its base and then again re-attached by strong metal bolts from beneath.
CONDITION REPORT: The metal sculpture together with its bow, are in exceptionally good condition and free from any damage. The onyx base is also excellent save for a tiny nick to one corner edge. Difficult to photograph are two missing pieces of the decorative marble however none of the above detracts from the splendor of this magnificent example…
