** I apologize for the terrible exposure of the FIRST photograph, which does not represent this sculpture accurately, however I am not responsible for the over-processing of the photographic image, which is now subject to Ruby Lane policy **
This is a large and impressive sculpture with a powerful image of a prowling panther “Bagheera.” It was produced in France during the 1920s, and it is a gem of a piece…
It is unsigned however there is a trace of a foundry mark upon the panther’s underside/stomach and the quality of the metal would point towards having been cast at the Le Verrier foundry. This foundry also produced metal sculptures by many French artists of the Art Deco period, such as Le Faguays, Becquerel, Bouraine, De Marco and numerous others. None of these artists were consistent in signing all of their works and those who did also used various pseudonyms, even upon the same example sculpture. This can make attributing a ‘name’ to a piece problematic however one needs only to study the detail and the quality of this piece, to know that is was designed, sculptured and then cast by quality producers of the period…
This was an expensive & desirable sculpture at the time of manufacture, which would have retailed at top class Salons in Paris, France, such as Etling for example.
Please study my photographs which show the remarkable sense of movement that this piece achieves in the round. The portrayal of a panther has been faithfully captured with naturalistic pose, whilst also capturing ‘the age’ of Art Deco in fabulous style & form… Art Deco metal sculptures of a panther by any artist of the period don’t get much better than this in terms of its presence. French items in particular are almost unsurpassed in terms of quality & design. From fine paintings, to glass, pottery items and sculpture etc. leading exponents have existed within every working medium within the arts, and this sculpture is no exemption… The metal casting is heavy (which is a sign of top quality) and the patina finish is superb. It is real ‘show-stopper’ of a piece, I assure you.
Impossible for me show by means of a photograph is the magnificent size & scale of this incredible piece. The total length is an impressive 21.75 inches by 6.5 inches wide. The sculpture itself measures 19 inches long x 6 inches high, and so the entire piece is sleek & slender enough to be displayed upon a mantle shelf for example, as a wonderful focal point in any room…
CONDITION REPORT: The condition of this piece is pristine. The metal sculpture is free from any ‘dings or dents’ or damage repairs and all of the original patina is present. The marble base is also in fabulous condition throughout. It feels as smooth as glass to the touch and the edges are also free of any nicks or chips.
