`Poissons' is one of the most dramatic of all aquatic designed vases by Sabino, and it displays his remarkable abilities as a sculptor and a complete understanding of opalescent glass as a working medium.
Born in Sicily, Italy in 1878 his family moved to France whilst he was still a young boy. He went on to study at L'École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs and the Beaux Arts de Paris, and following WW1 he set up his first factory where he produced light fittings and then lamp shades etc. His greatest achievements at that time were his amazing crystal glass chandelier installations.
By the mid 1920's Sabino developed his very own opalescent glass, which is characteristically a creamy-blue in colour and with a waxy-like feel. His abilities a sculptor enabled him to produce an amazing array of designs, from figurative and animal studies to bowls plates dishes and vases using a wide variety of glass colours, many of which I have currently available and can be seen here in my shop...
This particular piece a visual delight from each and every angle wherever it is suitably displayed. It captures the Art Deco period to perfection, with its precisely placed, stylized fish, in a geometrical fashion upon the outside of the glass. Each fish has been moulded in a slightly different pose which provides a naturalistic movement to the vase, whilst the solid square base compliments its angular form.
As my photographs demonstrate, this vase is particularly spectacular when viewed from above. The qualities of the glass together with the decorative features produce a `burst' of beautiful opalescence, which is ever-changing, subject to different light conditions.
This particular example is an original vintage piece from the 1930s, produced in France for the French market only and not for export. The vase carries two separate signatures, one to the top of the vase and one to the side of the base: SABINO PARIS
The glass is a good ½ inch thick and is a quality piece of French opalescent crystal. The condition of the vase is excellent, however for accuracy of description a very tiny shell-flake can be felt to the underside top rim. This by no means detracts from the splendor of the vase and it is more than just a worthy example for your collection or as a gift to a loved one...
