Here for your collection is spectacular example of French Art Deco sculpture by Salvatore Melani (1902-1934)
Melani, was an Italian sculptor working in Paris, France and was short lived. He died at just 32 years of age and very little information is recorded about his life, however his output as an artist was quite incredible as is evident by the remarkable At Deco sculptures that he left behind. He worked with most mediums from plaster, terracotta spelter and bronze, and produced numerous figurative studies of both male and female form and a wide variety of animals, during the Art Deco period.
This particular piece has been produced from plaster, and these studies have always been hugely popular as they provide affordability to all without losing their artistic or their visual appeal...
Melani, possessed a remarkable ability to capture `a moment' with exceptional naturalistic form, whilst in-keeping with the style and fashion of the Art Deco period. This piece would have been produced at the very height of Art Deco during the 1920s and its image is timeless within any interior setting. It is also unobtrusive as its size makes it suitable to be displayed in a variety of places, such as a mantle shelf or a dresser for example.
My photographs are perhaps the best description of this study of a lioness and her two cubs. Whether she is about to spring onto their prey or is poised in protection, this is a very striking sculpture, with an almost feminine grace, from each and every angle.
Invariably these sculptures were produced from a mould, using composite mixtures of plaster and other compounds. Additional strength was provided by metal rods and or wires which were placed into the mould together with the plaster and then left to solidify and to harden completely. Only then would the mould be removed and then the exceptionally skillful task of hand painting to produce an aged bronze-like finish and highlights to the piece could begin, and all without an airbrush!
All works by Milani are signed and four different signatures are recorded. One of which was a monogrammed stamp which was reserved for very large cast bronze sculpture. Other items will carry: Salvatore Melani, S. Melani or Melani, and some will also carry a serial model number. This piece is numbered 704 and is signed Melani, as is shown.
Condition wise the sculpture is in excellent shape with just one or two very minor chips to the paint which as my photographs illustrate are barely noticeable at all, and are to the base of the piece and so they do not detract. It is a remarkable survivor of original French Art Deco sculpture which at this current offer price is also a wise investment...
