This sweet little dress is made from navy blue organdy fabric and well exemplifies the styles worn to Sunday School or special occasions by little girls of the 1950's era. The dress has cap sleeves that are slightly gathered at the tops and a very full skirt. The Peter Pan collar is made from off white polished cotton and the belt is made from a coordinating floral print polished cotton.....there is a gathered tie attachment in the front and the belt buttons at the back with two round plastic navy buttons. The bodice has two seams at the front and two at the back and there is a faux closure at the front with five very small buttons covered in the same fabric as the collar. The dress closes at the back with navy plastic buttons....three are present, one is missing. All inner seams are nicely finished. Under the dress is a matching slip made from the same organdy fabric as the dress. The neckline of the slip is scooped front and back and the slip closes with three navy plastic buttons at the back. Under the slip skirt there is a tulle crinoline. There are two seams on the front and two seams on the back of the slip bodice. Now, what makes this outfit extra special is the fact that the matching accessories were saved throughout the years and kept with the dress. There is a dear navy blue drawstring purse with little sweetheart roses and lace trim and a darling umbrella which is also made from the navy organdy and detailed with rows of gathered trim and a little bit of the floral polished cotton, too! And, then there are the little off white crocheted gloves which close at the wrist with a small and dainty round crocheted button. The gloves were handmade in France! Once upon a time, some little lady was quite the well dressed little Princess in this wonderfully complete outfit.
Condition: Very Good
There are some minor issues with this ensemble, but considering that this outfit is well over 50 years old, it's obvious that this was a treasured memory for some doting Mother! As mentioned previously, one button is missing on the back closure of the dress....this could easily be replaced as it is a plain navy blue button. The material in the bodice of the dress has suffered the most and there are several small holes present.....one next to the collar on the upper right side, one on the same side near the gathered waist and one pull and small hole on the back of the bodice on the lower right side. Just above the second and third small buttons on the front of the bodice, there are small frayed areas. The skirt appears to be in good condition with no detectable holes, but there is one very faint light spot (dot) on the front of the skirt. Because of the gathers, this is not noticeable....only when you are specifically looking for it. On the back of the belt where is buttons, there are two tiny spots left by a pin and these actually are not seen at all when the belt is buttoned. The under slip is in very good condition. The organdy material has no detectable holes, but there is one tear in the crinoline on one of the ruffles at the bottom. Again, the slip has a similar light spot (dot) as the dress which is very minor. As for the accessories, the gloves are in good condition with no holes, but do have some stains which may come out with washing. They really don't look bad at all, but with age there is some discoloration. The round drawstring pocketbook shows some wear....the lace trim has some discoloration from age and the satin material which covers the cardboard form has faded somewhat over the years and the end of one drawstring cord has some fraying....but, it's still sweet! I think the cutest accessory is the umbrella or parasol, whichever you prefer to call it. Here the condition is excellent....no holes, no discoloration and it works perfectly! The only things to mention on the parasol is minor scuffing to the paint on the wood handle and the satin ribbon loop or hanger is stained and shows wear. Label: Ruth of Carolina by Ruth Originals
