Vintage 1960's Black Embossed Leather Box Purse by Dofan

This vintage glossy black leather box purse carries the logo of Dofan, a French manufacturer of fine ladies handbags. There is some speculation that the company began producing purses as early as the 1930's....I'm not sure, but after doing some research, I do know that their trademark was registered in 1945. Their purses seemed to be of very high quality and this one is no exception. Box purses were popular in the 1950's as well as the early 1960's. This particular one could be from the late 1950's, but I decided to go with the 1960's. Regardless, it is such a stylish little purse......a box bag with a "dressy" side! I think it looks a little less casual because of the alligator pattern of the leather and the shiny brass snap catch. It has two handles and the top of this octagonal (eight sided) purse feels as if it is slightly padded. There is a nice wide mirror attached to the inside of the lid and the bag is lined with black grosgrain lining. A truly wonderful vintage find!

Condition: Very Good

As nice as this handbag is, it is vintage and does have a few slight issues which I feel that I must mention. There is a little scuff mark on the side panel near the bottom and several slight rub marks on the handles, possibly where they have moved across one another over the years. On the back panel of the purse, there are some slight marks....don't know what has been the culprit, but they are certainly not very noticeable....only when you are looking for them in the light. The mirror is in very good condition......clear and not damaged. I wouldn't say this is a flaw, but the leather does have places that are less smooth or shiny....almost appear to have been there from the beginning and possibly something in the manufacturing process of the imprinting of the leather. Look at the photos and see how dear this little box purse is and these things won't be of any bother at all. I surely would be happy to carry this vintage purse anywhere, any time!
