Offered for sale is a 1920's brimless cloche or "helmet" style cloche. This type of cloche was very popular during the mid to late 1920's. This cloche is very similar to one that is pictured on page 299 in the book written by Susan Langley entitled, Vintage Hats and Bonnets 1770-1970. She describes her cloche as "asymmetrically draped velvet" and I do believe that is an apt description of this hat. There is a large section of black grosgrain ribbon directly across the forehead which gives a very dramatic look to this hat which might have been worn for evening wear. Material is draped backwards across the crown of the head and has the appearance of being attached by two buckles. These two buckles are made of what looks like aluminum and are set with clear rhinestones. There is a little flap at the back of the neckline which gives even more of a helmet effect to this cloche. The hat is completely lined with black material. This cloche does bring to mind the fashions of the Art Deco period.
Condition: Very Good Condition
Considering that this hat is most likely almost 90 years old, it is in wonderful condition. The black velvet is not faded and is in strong condition, but there is a slight bit of wear to the velvet which is on the front of the hat just under the buckle detail. The inner lining is in excellent condition with no tears or frays. The buckles are one of the few things on this hat that have succumbed to age....the clear rhinestones have lost quite a bit of their original sparkle and some have really darkened with time. I suppose the rhinestones could be replaced with new ones...I would leave that completely up to the new owner. Overall, this hat is a small treasure from an exciting time in our past..... most especially a time of new found freedom for women in their way of dressing. It has survived to tell the story of a time of great change in women's fashions! The Roaring Twenties!
Label: Bonnie Bonnet (Stitched with gold thread in the crown of the cloche). The logo of this company, also, appears....a Bellman carrying two hat boxes with the letter "B" on each box! I love the label on this hat...so sweet!
