Charming black and white calico dress with a Greek key design applique trim. The dress has a wonderful country look. The applique trim goes around the high waist and sloped shoulder and is also on the bottom of each of the 2 short ruffles on the hemline and again at the top of those ruffles. Otherwise, it is a simple design with just a high waistline and gathered from there. There are 2 hooks and loops in the back for closure. The dress is well made, sewn partly by hand but mostly by machine. The slope shoulders were usually made for a china head doll, but the dress is a bit wide and short. It also has the narrow sleeves for dolls like the chinas.
This is probably from the late 1800s (1870s to 80s) and is in excellent condition for the age. There are no rips or tears. I noticed a small rust spot caused by the hooks. I took a close up picture of this from the inside of the dress. There are a few other age spots in the back about 1/4" in size and not noticeable as they are small and fall into the folds of the gathers.
The dress is 11" long from shoulder to hem measuring from mid shoulder, but starting to measure where the shoulder insert is, it is then only 10" long. The high neckline is 7" around. The sloped shoulder is 6 3/4" across from seam to seam. The sleeves are 4 1/4" long and 2 3/4" around.
A while back I did have a china head doll that fit this dress and another dress that I am also selling at this time. It would also be great on a cloth or rag doll that would fit this shape. I am showing the two dresses together with a third morning coat that fit the early doll I had. These were all part of her wardrobe and all 3 were calicos.
