Chinese scholar Huanghuali wood brush pot

Wonderful solid, dense finely finished and finely grained huanghuali brushpot of cylindrical form with rounded rim over slightly concave sides and base with center plug. Rare and desirable "ghost face" grain pattern inside and outside of the brushpot. Dating from the late Qing Dynasty (1850 – 1912). Brushpot is 7.5" (19 cm) tall, 7 1/4" (18.5 cm) outside diameter and 6" (15 cm) inside diameter. HUANGHUALI - "yellow flowering pear," huanghuali is a warm-toned hardwood related to the rosewood family, varying in color from pale honey to dark purple-brown. Because of its beautiful color and grain, it was the most favored hardwood used for fine furniture making in the mid-Ming to Qing dynasties. Noted for its attractive grain and its strength after being shaped and carved, this material was costly and used only for special furniture commissions. Predominantly grown on Hainan Island, Huanghuali is now virtually extinct. Condition: no problems to report.
