Tiffany & Co Japanesque Sterling Silver Serving Fork with Floral Engraving

The is a rare find! This is a block handled Sterling Silver Serving Fork made by Tiffany & Co circa 1880. This lovely 5 tinned fork exhibits the Japanesque style that Edward Moore brought to Tiffany design in the 1870 - 1880's. This is part of the Aesthetic Movement, designs that dealt with nature. The block handle has a satin finish that is finely engraved with flowers, leaves, and blossoms. This engraving flows down unto the fork in an understated and elegant way. The back of the handle has the number 217 for the pattern number and I have found similar block handled Tiffany pieces from the same time with corresponding numbers 215 and 216. It also has the letter M for Moore and Tiffany & Co along with the word Sterling. The script of the M is what dates the piece to 1880's. The fork is 9 1/2" in length by 2 1/2" wide and weights 3.5 troy oz.. It is in excellent condition having the smallest of dimples on the back handle and a wiggle in the center tine, where it seems to have been bent at some point in time. Lovely and unique piece. Very similar engraving work as the Japanesque Sterling Box by Tiffany circa 1873 on the www. 925-1000 .com website.
