This is an ornate master butter knife in sterling silver by Knowles, circa 1880. The pattern is unknown but described by others as with bird on handle. It is a detailed intertwining of leaves and delicate scrolls with a bird flying, about to land on the handle. The blade is satin finished and bright cut with leaves and a spray of flowers. There is a monogrammed "Y" on the reverse of the handle. The piece is marked 10 Sterling on the back. There is not a makers mark but I have found the other pieces in the same pattern marked Knowles. It is 6 3/4" in length and weights 22 grams. J.B & S.M Knowles was based in Providence, RI. Knowles was manufacturing from 1875-1905, and would eventually be purchased by Mauser.
