This family is renowned for their beautiful silver work. William Bateman was the son of Jonathan and Ann Bateman who in 1800 entered in partnership with his uncle Peter and his mother Ann. The tongs were assayed in London in 1826, the letter l indicates this. The tongs measure 6" long and 2" wide and weight 1.3 troy oz. They are in very good condition considering their age, over two hundred years. They have the monogram A P in a lyrical script.
