Superb Rosewood Fitted Box with mop and pewter inlay
This is one of the nicest quality boxes I have seen in a while. It is English c 1865.The box is made of Rosewood, with lovely colour, and dramatic grain. The lid and front have triple stringing, two lines of pewter and the center line is boxwood. There is a mother-of-pearl cartouche on the top (could be engraved) and a charming heart shaped escutcheon around the keyhole, also mother-of-pearl.
Inside: Inside the lid is a compartment which swings forward for letters. It has a midnight blue velvet frame, filed in with pleated pale blue silk and a satin ribbon pull.
The interior of the box is fitted out. The top two third section lifts out revealing a cavity below. The back third has one lidded section.
The lift out' part has a pin cushion area, covered with the same midnight blue velvet, a pull out silk covered needle book, a silk covered lid, with sections to house sewing instruments, cavity below and finally a small lift out box with sliding lid, there is a key in this box which is the same period as the main box, but the lock is inoperative. The interior has been recovered with marbled paper ( as original) and both the silk and velvet are replaced, making this box clean and wholesome to once again stow, papers, jewellery and the like.
The box measures 12" long x 8 3/4" wide x 5 1/2" high
