Ocean Jasper is a recent discovery found in Madagascar and is one of the worlds most unusual jaspers. It is a form of orbicular jasper and is sometimes referred to as "Atlantis Stone". It's markings are almost indescribable. No other stone contains such a variety of colour and pattern, green in all shades, orange, pink, white, lilac, yellow, brown, wavy lines, polka dots and sometimes cavities are present which are filled with sparkling druzy quartz. This is truly a beautiful gem and like other jaspers is a member of the quartz family. It is strange name for such an earthy stone and it is believed that its name refers to the wavy patterns it often displays . This necklace was made from some very amazing beads: Bulls-eye Ocean Jasper (found only at Sea of Madagascar & only at low tide!) and Gem quality red Garnet and Peridot. Ocean jasper is a very interesting bead with an interesting history. It is found near Morovato, Madagascar a large Island in Indian Ocean off East South Africa. In 1922, this stone appeared in articles but nobody could find its origin. In 1955, a Paul Obeniche read about the stone while a student in Paris. He was to spend his next 40 years looking for this stone but never found them. Then, at age 70, on his LAST trip to seek these stones , his boat got stuck in mud at low tide at Morovato,Madagascar & he found a deposit with ocean jasper!! But not all ocean jasper are created equal. These Large Ocean Jasper have an orbicular design: dots. Some people call them bull's eye ocean jasper, and they are more valuable & sought after than the plainer jasper. This necklace is covered with these very beautiful and very interesting beads. They are so pretty on both sides so that is why I thought of being able to turn them over to show a "different" side. Also, peridot is hard to find in such a perfect green color. Peridot cannot be "dyed" so this beautiful green is natural. This is a work of Art with a very interesting history. It is a bit on the heavy side so be sure to have a "strong" neck!
