This dainty treasure is genuine jet on a sterling silver back with a "C" hinged clasp from the earlier Victorian period. It measures 1 1/2" by 3/8" wide. It is stamped sterling silver on the back. The seed pearls that are inlaid and framed are also claw set and this is the kind of glorious detail found in these Victorian lovelies. There are a few little chips on the sides of the black jet but it really doesn't show up when worn as jet is as black on top as it is all the way through. The 3 natural seed pearls in this pin are valuable on their own because of the rarity of natural pearls and these are small mabe ones protected by the superior setting. A pin like this is from Whitby where all the jet was mined and made into coveted pins like this for women to wear during their mourning period on a prominent place of their attire. This made them not only valued for the sentiment they expressed but for the convention upheld by society because of their Queen's loss of her Consort, in Prince Albert's early death. A rare treasure from a valued period of jewelry craftsmanship.
