Japanese Satsuma Ware Polychrome Enamel Small Teapot & Sugar Basin
Japanese Satsuma ware small teapot and sugar basin, in Kutani style polychrome enamel with a flying bird motif and jade enamel bamboo design handle and spout, these were made throughout the 20th century, and could
could be as old as the 1920's or as late as the 1970's, though I think these are the earlier period, they appear to have some age to them. No box, the teapot and the sugar basin measures approx 5" tall including the lids, they have extensive but fine surface crazing and light discoloration, and both have chips to the interior rims under the lids, (these condition issues are reflected in the price) otherwise they are in good order and display well. The pair are signed by the maker - see photos. These lovely traditional designs have always been very influential on western china patterns, I have also photographed the set next to an English transfer-ware plate as I think the similarities are striking.
I would like to thank Ann Moser of Finds & Keepers on Ruby Lane for her generous help in identifying these items.
