Early Victorian Era Cameo Mourning Pendant with Hand Forged Chain
Lovely early Victorian mourning pendant, with a ladies profile in sterling, on a black and white banded mount (I think ebony and bone) set on a brass mounting. The pendant is hung on an antique (but I think perhaps not quite as early) hand forged chain with alternating long and short soldered links that fastens with a hook, I think this is also probably sterling though in common with much Victorian jewelry it is not marked, so purchase as silver metal. The necklace measures approx 18" long, while the pendant is just over 1". The set is in good antique order, the brass base may once have had a silver plated overlay as there is some silver residue and very slight corrosion to the reverse, but it looks lovely as is, slightly time worn and charming. The only very minor problem I found was that the pendant turns slightly on the chain, this could be easily redeemed by hanging the pendant on a jump ring and then putting it back on the chain, but as this is how it came to me I have left as is, and I will leave any alterations to the discretion of the purchaser. This lovely old necklace will be sent in a gift box.
