A beautiful and fairly rare pair of stunning matched Aztec face mask pins, one set in obsidian and the other in deep green onyx to provide a witty contrast. The brooches are identically formed, obviously designed to be worn together if desired, they each measure approx 2 1/2" wide by 2" tall, and are very detailed with a flat cutwork head-dress, with detailed filigree overlay round the face. These beautifully constructed brooches each have different markings, one is marked sterling silver, the other Plata Platino Mexico for the maker.
The brooch are in very good vintage condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs to the gemstones, and just the slight of wear to the sliver, they show slight patina and if desired they could be polished brighter. The backs are both fitted with fully functioning and secure rollover-locking clasps, there is the slightest distortion to one of the pins, but both are very firm.
These are wonderful examples of Mexican artisan work, where an indigenous cultural motif has been reworked to form a dramatic jewelry statement. Collectable, elegant and highly wearable, this suite is vintage Mexican silver in its' most artistic form.
