Late 1930's or early 1940's pleated black velour turban, with wired rhinestone trim pulling the pleats together to the back. The hat has a narrow canoe shaped profile, and then splays out into the fan at the back. Designed to be worn with the slimline suits of the time, it utilizes a minimal close profile to maximum effect. Very elegant design, the hat carries an German label, I think "Grishel Hau, Giessen" (Giessen is a city in Germany) and something else which I couldn't read and "Wien" (Vienna), I wondered at the history, perhaps it arrived with a refugee? The hat is in very good estate condition for the age, with just minor wear to the nap and discoloration to the interior. Flexible medium in size, it slightly perches on the head. These earlier 20th century hats are getting harder to find, and this is a really glamorous example.
