Luscious, long plumes appear to float over this sublime black Edwardian dated hat. The condition is nothing less than marvelous!
Strong, comfortably wearable, this authentic circa 1912 hat could be one of the few from your collection that you can actually wear and handle because it remains that strong and resilient.
The plumes are beautiful and entirely authentic. Silvery gray, black and white plumes wrap around and band the crown. A thick "waterfall" styled white plume is positioned so that it rises up above the rest.
A large, fluffy pompom of feathers finishes the design. This is positioned over the stitching, where the feathers are attached all attached to the hat.
The original hatpin as found with this hat is included. The pin has a round wooden knob on the end. It is painted with slightly metallic blue-black paint. Please refer to the photographs.
This style of hat is what the Edwardians nicknamed "a beaver hat".
Don't worry! This is not fur and it most certainly not from a real beaver!
Beaver hats are made from long-fibered felted wool! Please refer to the photographs...notice the fuzzy all over texture.
This beautifully contrasts against the movement and softness of the feathers. This hat is simple, but a truly lovely design.
Beaver hats were quite popular during this era. They are exceptionally strong. The long-fibered beaver foundations were used for women's hats. Beaver textured hats were also styled for men as well...originally made into men's top hats.
Typical of most beaver hats, this one is unlined within the interior. There is no milliner's label.
Entirely hand-stitched, the brim is carefully wired. The foundation is otherwise entirely molded and steamed to shape over a wooden hat mold when it was originally made.
This was an era when hats were so enormous that they were practically impossible to wear (some weighed several pounds and were over 3 feet across!). These enormous hats were certainly uncomfortable...although spectacular!
Unlike those, this hat measures a sensible 14.5 inches (or 36.5 cm) across. The plumes are nicely balanced and give it a grand look without the added physical weight. The largest white plume measures approximately 19 inches (49 cm) end to end!
This hat is exceptionally comfortable to wear! It is wonderfully sturdy, and entirely authentic.
If you have a large hat size, or if you have ultra-thick hair...or if you wear your long hair up in chignon styles similar to the Edwardians, then this hat should fit well. Use of a hatpin might be necessary if you have a smaller head size.
The hat displays beautifully.
This hat measures approximately 25 inches (64 cm).
**This hat is in beautiful vintage Mint condition and appears to have been very gently worn. Obviously, this hat has been lovingly kept for an entire century! It is absolutely clean within the interior. There are no unpleasant odors, holes, stains or moth nips. It comes from a professional collection, in a strictly non-smoking environment.
