Superb Antique Victorian Aesthetic Sterling Locket ~ 1880s

A fabulous sterling etched locket from the Victorian Aesthetic (c1880) era. This wonderful piece is made of sterling silver and carries ornate designs to both sides. The front of the oval shaped locket has two raised superbly patterned and textured bands, with a flowing etched design to the center. The sides have very finely detailed chasing. This gives the piece a superbly tactile, three dimensional look.

The back has very fine etching in the Aesthetic Movement manner. The design is a superbly rendered stork in flight, surrounded by bamboo foliage. The inside of the locket opens to reveal a compartment with original glazing. The other side has original satin in royal blue. It hangs from a large bail and opens and snaps shut firmly. Unmarked, which is not unusual for these pieces, it tests as solid silver of sterling grade.

Dimensions: The locket hangs approximately 2 1/4 inches in length; width is 1 1/2 inches and is 2/8 inches thick. The inside of the bail measures 3/8" long. Weight is 16.8 grams. The locket is in exceptional condition.

This is a wonderful example of Victorian design and workmanship and is a beautiful piece of history to wear or collect.
