Antique Rose 10 Carat Gold Enamelled & Chased Oval Locket ~ c1870s - 1880s

This is a beautiful oval rose gold front and back locket circa 1870s – 1880s. The front is superbly chased with ivy leaves and has wonderful enameling in Dresden blue with the same motif. The back is embossed and has a blank cartouche with belt decoration ~ a Victorian symbol of eternal strength and love.

Inside there are the original photographs of the locket owner in Victorian mourning dress. The photos are wonderful and taken when people presented their real face to the camera, and we see their life experience clearly. The interior is complete with ornate retaining rings and original glass.

The condition of this splendid piece is exceptional. It is rare to find a locket in complete and undamaged condition with close to perfect enameling. It is unmarked, but tests as at least 10 carat. Measuring about 1inch (1-1/8 with the bale) by 3/4 inch in width, it weighs 7 grams. The final image shows the locket alongside a Morgan dollar for size comparison.
