Russian Bronze - Crossing The Balkans A. LANCERAY 1877
"This work celebrates the achievements of the Russian army during the crossing of the Balkans, the last obstacle on the march towards Constantinople, in the extremely harsh conditions... To the left, a soldier helps his horse climb a steep slope and in the centre another Cossack rider begins his descent. Both elements formed independent compositions titled 'Horsemen in the Balkans' and 'Crossing the Balkans: Soldier on his Horse'. Originally intended as a mantel clock, the composition of the sculpture is arched to accommodate the clock. A variant of this composition, with the mountain in white marble to simulate snow,
Bronze measures 16.5 inches tall, 20 inches wide, 8.5 inches deep, plus marble base. Nice medium to dark brown patina. Excellent, un-restored condition. 1890's recast done in France. Appraised by Christie's New York in 2011 for $5,000 - $15,000.
This piece is from a local (Portland, OR) estate. The owner has little history but he bought it from another estate in an old Portland home about 20 years ago, but has no idea where that family purchased it. I have researched it extensively and guarantee its authenticity as described.
