United States Navy Recruiting Poster-"Christy Girl"-Print

This poster and others like it were re-issued by the U. S. Government around the time of the Vietnam War to encourage enlistment. It is a reprint of the World War I poster originally done by Howard Chandler Christy in 1917. "Gee I Wish I Were A Man I'd Join The Navy" features one of the famous "Christy Girls" wearing a Naval uniform. The model is Bernice Smith Tongate, she was overheard using the featured phrase by Christy himself and asked to pose for him. Ten days later she joined the Navy as a yeoman and served for three years. She was the first woman to enlist from California and when World War Two broke out she again tried to enlist only to be told she was to old. That didn't deter her, she enlisted in the U.S. Army instead! High quality, heavy paper stock poster with a matte finish. RAD # 73714 in the bottom right corner. Print measures 38 x 25 and it is in very good condition and ready for framing. There is some discoloration and a few areas around the edges that are torn or creased but these are slight and take nothing away from its great look and appeal. Really nice.
