This is a very pretty old box from France. It may have been a trinket box, pill box, or compact. It is made of a gold toned metal, maybe brass. The top of it has a hand painted portrait of a lady. Surrounding the portrait are small faux pearls (I believe they are made of glass, not plastic) and a design done in turquoise and white enamel. Each faux pearl is prong set. The portrait has a rope design bordering it, and the box itself has a double rope border.
Inside the box is a beveled mirror with a rope detail surrounding it. The bottom inside is marked with the number 38. The lip around the mirror is marked, "MADE IN FRANCE". The edge of the box has a fancy floral design, and the back side (below the hinge) has a loop where it could have been hung from a belt or something (maybe around the wrist?). The portrait has glass on top of it.
The box is in great condition. The gold finish shows expected wear. The back of the glass over the portrait has a black speck on it, but I didn't try to clean it because I did not know how to take it apart. The is not latch on the lid (there never appears to have been any kind of latch). It measures approx. 1.75 inches in diameter and .5 inch deep.
