Early Celluloid Apple (or Plum) Thimble Holder Dated1904 Switzerland

This is a very early piece of celluloid plastic. It is a piece of fruit, either an apple or a plum. I believe that its purpose was either to be a thimble or thread holder, or maybe just a little keepsake box. It is very real looking. It is made into the shape of the apple and appears to be hand painted in a deep purple (maroon) color and a golden color. Inside is a note which describes it better than I can. It says:

"Brought to Charlene B from Switzerland by Mrs. Haley- grandmother of Erpha Lundy Mathews"...

It continues on the back to say:

"Mrs. Haley was born in Switzerland & returned to visit her folks. (Charlene was a little girl when she received this precious gift"

The person who wrote the note also wrote on the inside and outside of the box. I can't make it all out, but inside is says Zurich, Switzerland July 9, 1904 Scharline from Anna Hoelle (?). Everything that was written on the outside has worn off so much that I can't make it out except for "Switzerland"

This piece measures approx. 1.5 inch tall and 1.75 inches wide. It is in beautiful condition. This only problem is see is that there are a few surface scratches, which I tried to show as best I could in the photos.
