1870's Cheyenne Moccasins

Collected by General John Cook while working at Pine Ridge in the early 1870's, these "buffalo track" moccasins show cultural use but are still in fabulous condition with very minor bead loss of one lane of green on the top of one. Otherwise, the beadwork is totally intact. This early beadwork features "greasy" yellow, grass green, cobalt blue, chalk sky blue, deep white-heart red and white; all classic colors indicative or the 1870's Indian war period. All sinew sewn on native tanned deer hide with parfleche soles. The wonderful aspect of the interior of the soles is that they are cut from old painted parfleche hide containers and the painting matches typical Cheyenne design motifs and color usage. Moccasins measure slightly over 10" in length. It goes without saying, that the rarity of beadwork created in the 1860's or 1870's and predating Reservation work commands a higher price than those pieces made in the 1880's and beyond.
