Paper Butterfly with Gold Thread / Wire Wings

This unusual and highly skilled artisan butterfly is hand strung wire that is no larger than a thread. I can't tell what the actual wings are made of, but they mimic the wings of a natural butterfly. I think they are some kind of parchment paper. The wires cross over each other in a woven pattern that holds the wings in place. The "body" of the piece has a black covering and the head is a small pearl. The antennas are tiny wires as well. It is really an interesting work of art and very delicate. It measures 2 X 1¾ inches.

My research resulted in finding that the wires that comprise the wings are actually a gold thread. These treasures were often brought back from Japan during WWII by soldiers for their wives and sweethearts.

I have another of these unusual butterflies listed as item #782, which is a different color.
