This small plate is in the popular pattern, "The Chess Players", circa 1835. The maker was William Adams. It is also seen listed under the name "Chess Battle". The pattern was made in differing styles of pottery for adults and for children. This plate was probably a child's plate. It is a strong shade of purple with the colorful embossed flowers around the rim.
The condition: On the back of the plate, there is a short indented line which most likely happened in the making. It is not a crack. The front seems perfect. No cracks, chips, or restoration of any kind. Diameter: 8 inches.
Any chess players out there? I have a second matching one also if you are interested.
