This is a wonderful antique late 18th or early 19th century terracotta plaque, depicting Catherine II of Russia, with the inscription around the edge in cyrillic "B.M. Ekaterina.II.Imperat.I.Samoder.Vseros." It measures 5 3/8" in diameter and about 1" deep at the thickest part. It is signed along the bottom of the bust "J.B.Nini F." and dated 1771 in small numbers below. Jean Baptiste Nini was famous for his terracotta plaques of Benjamin Franklin, and the Royals of Europe. A similar plaque of Catherine II, with a different profile, sold at Christies for $10,800 on 4/18/2007. The plaques of Benjamin Franklin, typically sell between $3000 and $5000. This plaque was consigned to Christies in April of 2009 with an estimate of $3000-$5000 but was unsold. I am offering it on Rubylane for the lower part of this estimate. It is in excellent condition with only a few very minute fleabites along the edge. You will be very pleased... this is a wonderful piece of history.
