Commemorating the 1901 Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia when Tasmania ceased to be a colony of Britain, this was one of the many souvenirs created for sale to wealthy Australian tourists. The top is shaped like the island of Tasmania and has the name engraved across it and some incised lines representing rivers leading in from the coast. Reaching down from the twist handle, long silver prongs support a lovely pink seashell which functions as the bowl.
The back of the top is stamped SILVER much like the hallmark used on ca 1900 Chinese silver and it tests to be at least 900 purity. It is 4 3/4" (12 cm) long and weighs 9.5 grams. Condition is excellent.
