Beautifully glazed in a wonderful even green celadon, this large 7 1/2" h by 9 1/4" w censer has a thickly potted round body on three legs. From the 1700s, it once had a pierced wood top but those don't tend to survive. The braided rope handles are attached to the sides and everted rim.
This censer comes from the Rae family, early San Francisco pioneers. At some point in time it has been used as a jardiniere or flower bowl because there are mineral deposits on the unglazed interior. The outside is in excellent condition- no chips, scratches, cracks or repairs. The glaze is still smooth and shiny. The weight is 5 lb 8 oz.
