Found in the locked safe of the estate of a well to do collector, I am assuming this to be an old and esteemed piece. Carved in the round from a hard soapstone, the dozing cat has an annoyed expression with its ears flattened back and its tail flicking over its back aimed at the large butterfly which has alighted near its head. The smooth finely polished stone feels good to the touch and it displays the simplicity of old carvings. The pale green gray stone has some light russet inclusions.
It measures 2 1/2" (63 mm) x 2" (51 mm) x 1 1/4" (32 mm) high. It weighs 145 grams. There is a very old small chip, now darkened, near the cats right front paw and a bruise near the right eye.
There are two of these almost identical carvings.
