Antique Victorian Large Bronze Doorknocker w/ Cherubs
At almost four pounds, this impressive doorknocker would have been mounted on a heavy entrance door and would certainly have roused any occupants. Probably of European manufacture. Two cherubs or putti are standing on a lion's head and holding a heavy bundle- fruit perhaps.
The dimensions are 8" by 6 1/8" and 1 3/4" thick. It weighs 3 lb 14 oz. It has been much polished over the decades and has polish residue in the crevices. The back, which has not been polished, displays a beautiful patina, one like the front will attain again. There is no striker, but a metal piece mounted on the door will work for the bottom of the knocker to strike against. The hinged mount at the top is sound.
