1868 Aesthetic Bailey & Co Crumber Sterling 12.5" Long

A heavy sterling crumber or crumb knife patented in 1868 and displaying decorative elements typical of the Aesthetic Period. The maker Bailey & CO. (1848-78) was a Philadelphia silver company who in 1878 became Bailey, Banks and Biddle renowned for their quality silver flatware and hollow ware. The handle is chased and incised creating a Grecian shell pattern with flower and leaf flourishes. The blade has fancy engraving of scrolls and florals. The back of the handle is monogrammed with the letter "G" (or CP or ?).

It is 12 1/2" long and 2 3/4" at its widest. Weight is 158 grams- 5 troy ounces. The marks on the back include Patented 868 which means August 1868. Condition is excellent with the lightest of surface scratches probably from polishing. There were no repairs.

Although this is technically a crumber, it can certainly be well utilized as a serving implement for fish, lasagna, pie etc.
