Presented for sale is a contemporary 20th century oil painting on board by Charles P. Gruppe depicting boats moored at a dock. This is typical of the work of Canadian painter Charles P. Gruppe (1860 – 1940.) It showcases his love of marine still life and his skill at American Tonalism with its subtle coloration and the reflective effects on the water. The artist has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner.
Charles P. Gruppe was born in Canada but moved to New York State at an early age. He was largely self-taught and eventually moved to Holland where he honed his skills relying on the influence of the Barbizon school and earlier Dutch landscape artists. Charles and his son Emile settled in the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts and painted many local landscapes in their respective studios. His works can be found in several museums as well as many private art collections. His family remain painters to this day.
The painting is in good condition with a small amount of in-painting in a few minor areas. The frame is more recent.
