Oil Painting Of Roman Soldiers, After Gilbert Gaul

Offered for sale is an oil painting on canvas (laid on board) depicting Roman soldiers attributed to Gilbert Gaul (1855-1919). The painting features a fallen soldier, his helmet off, being comforted by a comrade in what may be his dying moments. Another two practically indistinct soldiers rest in the background.

Gilbert Gaul was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1855 and studied art in the North until 1881. He inherited a large plot of land in Van Buren County, Tennessee through his mother's family and lived on the farm for four years to fulfill an obligation stipulated in the will. Although highly regarded as an illustrator, he became largely identified with the South and his depictions of the Civil War. He was a prolific traveler and made numerous trips to the West where he painted and illustrated Native Americans for Harper's Monthly, Century Magazine, Scribner's Monthly, and Cosmopolitan. He eventually settled in Nashville, TN where he taught classes to supplement his financial situation, which had been depleted by a fading interest in Civil War subjects. Gilbert Gaul returned to New Jersey around 1910 where he continued to paint and live out his remaining years. Gaul's painting can be found in prominent museum and private collections.

The painting is in excellent condition and has been re-laid on another stretched canvas to stabilize the paint and original canvas. It is set into contemporary gilded frame and signed in the lower right hand corner.
