We are proud to present a magnificent late 19th century pastoral oil on canvas depicting two young women. This painting was probably a commissioned piece to commemorate the two beautiful subjects. It is a study of two females, one playing a guitar the other with her back to us, head slightly turned, holding sheet music. The exquisite details in their facial expressions and clothing is obvious at first glance. The figures are forefront and placed against a textured background of trees that are painted to resemble a verdure tapestry. The rich coloration of the figures, starkly prominent against the dense leafy background, is a study in perfection. The painting is simply breathtaking.
Franz Ondrusek was a much sought after Czech genre painter, specializing in portraiture. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Prague and in Vienna. His paintings showcased a romantic leaning and his command of the palette was formidable.
The painting is set into a molded ebonized frame with incised relief decoration, original to the piece. The painting is in excellent condition with a small area of in-painting. It is signed (quite darkly) on the canvas, as well as on the rear and date (1899 ?)
