Presented for sale is a monumental French Empire dresser with cheval mirror, circa 1895, after the style of Jacob Desmalter (1770 – 1841.) This is part of a larger suite, no longer available, but representative of the bedroom suite made by Desmalter for Caroline Murat at the palais de l'Elysee, Paris.
The dresser is mounted with extraordinary bronze castings of caryatids, sphinxes, wreaths and anthemions. A large marble slab surmounts the top of the dresser and supports a u-shape frame, which holds the oval cheval mirror. The bronze mounts bear the initials of an (as yet) unknown maker on the reverse, "STO" or "STC". It is a very formal piece in the Empire manner and representative of the best custom furniture made in the 19th century Paris workshops.
The ensemble is in excellent condition, superbly constructed; the bronze mounts cleaned within the last 20 years. There is a restoration to the corner of the mirror bracket and a bronze cartouche missing on the mirror crest. Please note that the set is extremely heavy, crating will be recommended for the marble.
