This talented painter was born in Switzerland in 1842-1914 and achieved widespread popularity with his depiction of rural life and farm animals. This nostalgic appeal for the country made his paintings avidly collected by the upper class in the late 19th century. He achieved fame throughout his rather short lifetime and was best known for his depiction of sheep and goats.
The charm of this painting is evident in the young shepherd with his flute playing a tune for his goats. It is signed in the lower right hand corner and still retains its bright contrasting coloration. The painting is set into its original gilt molded frame and is in very good condition.
