This beautiful Louis XV style cylinder Bonheur du jour (daytime delight) or lady's writing desk is a fine mid 20th century reproduction of an earlier 18th century style. This particular desk was produced in Spain in the fashion of Vernis Martin with a pastoral scene decorating the desk roll. These Spanish pieces were very well made of mahogany and secondary exotic wood inlays and were fitted, just like the originals, with ormolu mounts and a divided interior.
The desk top rolls back when the drawer is extended. It is in very good condition with minor signs of age and use. An original 18th century bonheur du jour would run in the six figures and be beyond the reach of most people, however, these lovely 19th and 20th century hand-finished reproductions are still reasonable, finely constructed, and have the look of the originals. With their sinuous curves raised on delicate legs, they can be placed anywhere in a room and easily moved.
