Chelsea Style Porcelain Shell Form Bowl, Pheasants

This is an exceptional 19th century porcelain shell form bowl produced by the firm of Edmé Samson in the style of Chelsea with spurious gold anchor mark. The bowl has a scalloped edge crested with a scrolled cartouche. The fluted interior is decorated with a wide lime green border enhanced with a finely detailed painting of pheasants in a garden setting. The bowl is enhanced with raised gilt impasto work and would make an exquisite cabinet piece.

Edmé Samson (1810-1891) also known as the “great imitator” founded the French ceramics firm of Samson, Edmé et Cie. At first his firm supplied reproductions of famous ceramic pieces for museums and private collectors. His hard paste copies of early English pieces are often confused for the originals. Many of his pieces were of such superb quality that they began to be collected on their own merit.

The bowl is in very good age related condition with gilt loss occurring to the edges of the bowl.

Size: 10” Height by 8 5/8” Width.
