Early 19th C. Miniature Watercolor Portrait on Ivory of Gentleman

A exceptional early 19th century miniature watercolor portrait on ivory attributed to Philippe Abraham Peticolas (1760 – 1841), set into an embossed leather frame with brass border. The painting exhibits very fine detailing on the subject's face and hair capturing the elegance of an aged man of obvious importance.

The Peticolas Family was a talented group of painters who settled in the Richmond Virginia area. The patriarch, Philippe Abraham Peticolas was born in 1760 at Meziers in France but migrated to the United States settling in Virginia. He was regarded as a prolific and highly talented portrait painter and his works can be found in several major museum collections.

The portrait is in excellent condition, not signed but an old attribution was present on the frame when it came to us. The miniature came out of the estate of a major collector of fine English, French, and American miniature portraits and paintings. The paper backing of the portrait contains a preliminary sketch of the sitter. The leather frame exhibits some wear.
