A 19th century portrait of "Baby Stuart" from the famous painting by Anthony Van Dyck (1599 – 1641) of the children of Charles I, King of England. The original piece was painted in 1635 and depicts the three eldest children, Charles II, Princess Mary, and the infant Master James. The lone figure of James, in his gown and cap with an apple in his hand, has become so beloved that it has been copied for centuries by followers and disciples of Van Dyck.
This is a beautiful copy with a change of color to the gown; instead of blue, it is burgundy. The face is finely executed with stunning detail. The painting is in very good condition with crazing on the lighter colored areas of the figure. It is set into a recent carved easel frame.
